How Cat 2D E-Fence Technology Works

Excavator E-fence technology uses position sensors to monitor your machine’s front linkage in real time. The moment it approaches a boundary you’ve defined, the system automatically stops that motion, without manual correction or second-guessing. Operators can set every boundary directly from the in-cab touch-screen monitor, keeping setup simple. 

Once a boundary is active, the bucket, boom or stick will not cross it regardless of operator input, giving your team a consistent, reliable layer of protection from the first dig to the last.

Cat E-fence also works alongside Cat Grade with 2D technology, making it a natural addition to any excavator already running a grade control system. The two technologies share the same integrated platform, so there’s no extra equipment to manage on the jobsite.

Cat E-Fence Boundary Controls

Cat excavator boundary control comes in five distinct forms, each targeting a different type of jobsite hazard. All five are set directly from the in-cab touch screen. Once activated, no part of the boom, stick or bucket will cross any predefined limit:

Sets a maximum height boundary to keep the boom and stick clear of overhead obstacles like power lines, bridges and structures. Raise the boom to the desired height and activate — the machine won’t go higher.

Sets a depth limit for the bucket to protect underground fiber-optic cables and utilities. Position the bucket at your target depth to record the boundary.

Creates an electronic barrier directly in front of the machine, preventing the boom and stick from overextending toward nearby structures. Set the barrier by positioning the bucket close to the object you need to avoid.

Establishes left and right swing limits, which are critical for jobsites near live traffic, walkways or loading trucks. Two swing boundaries can be set simultaneously for full lateral coverage.

Prevents the bucket or hammer from making contact with the cab. Set it directly from the touch-screen monitor.
